Shenzhou-17 crew completes in-orbit repairs during 2nd extravehicular mission
2024-03-02

Astronauts Tang Hongbo, Tang Shengjie and Jiang Xinlin successfully completed all assigned tasks at 1:32 p.m. (Beijing time), after approximately eight hours of extravehicular activities. They worked together closely with the support of the space station's robotic arm and scientific researchers on Earth. The first extravehicular maintenance mission was conducted by Tang Hongbo and Jiang Xinlin, who have since returned safely to the Wentian lab module.

Building on the previous experience of extravehicular maintenance tests, this mission repaired damaged parts on the Tianhe core module's solar arrays that were caused by tiny space debris' impact. After evaluation and analysis, the solar array's power generation function is operating normally after evaluation and analysis. This mission marks the first time Chinese astronauts have completed an on-orbit repair mission for extravehicular facilities of a spacecraft. During the extravehicular activity, the astronauts also checked the condition of the space station's external structure.

The three astronauts are scheduled to carry out a variety of space scientific and technological experiments during the remainder of their space journey.
