This mission is the 6th manned flight mission of China's manned space program during the phase of space station application and development, the 37th launch mission since initiation of the program, and the 604th flight of Long March carrier rockets.

After their spaceship approaches and docks with the front port of the Tianhe core module of the Tiangong, the crew will enter the space station to meet with their Shenzhou XX peers — Chen Dong, Chen Zhongrui and Wang Jie.

Following an on-orbit crew rotation with the Shenzhou-20 crew, the Shenzhou-21 crew will work and live on orbit in China Space Station for about 6 months. Their duties will include installing, debugging, and maintaining on-orbit equipment, managing the space station combination, and conducting space science and technology experiments and tests.
